TBS Group Corporation established the TBS Charity Foundation with the mission of giving back to society through sustained charitable actions. Beyond financial donations, the Foundation places strong emphasis on personal visits and long-term care, offering companionship and support to the lonely elderly, disadvantaged families, and children in need. Through these continuous efforts, TBS Charity Foundation and its staff contribute sincerely and responsibly to the well-being of society.
Stories of Families Visited by the TBS Charity Foundation
Below are brief accounts of families and individuals whom the TBS Charity Foundation has personally visited and supported.
Story 1
A veteran serviceman passed away suddenly, leaving behind his seventy-year-old disabled wife and young granddaughter with no source of support. The granddaughter, a fifteen-year-old girl whose parents died when she was very young, faced this tragic loss with remarkable resilience. Knowing she was the sole caregiver for her grandmother, she refused to surrender to adversity. Currently a ninth-grade student, she demonstrates outstanding academic performance and admirable character.
Story 2
This family faced overwhelming misfortune when both parents passed away while their four sons were still young. Among the brothers, two were born with disabilities, and one later suffered a stroke. The eldest brother, Mr. Huang, became the family’s sole provider. Together with his wife, he worked in an ironworks factory after relatives distanced themselves from the family’s hardships. During our visit, we were encouraged to see that his children were healthy, intelligent, and full of promise.
Story 3
Mrs. Yang, a widow in her forties, lives in public housing with her daughter and her fourteen-year-old son, who has an intellectual disability. She herself suffers from heart disease and requires regular medication. Each time she spoke of her current circumstances, she was overwhelmed with emotion. Adding to her distress, the family faces the constant threat of losing their home, leaving them uncertain about where they would live.
Story 4
Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Huang was left to raise three children on her own. Once a complete family, she now faces life independently. Despite these challenges, she remains an indomitable woman and a devoted mother. Currently employed as a temporary government worker, she actively pursues permanent employment while studying in her spare time to earn college credits, which will improve her career prospects.
Story 5
An elderly couple lived alone in a small, one-room log cabin furnished with worn-out furniture. Though their children lived in Taipei, they were themselves struggling financially and unable to offer assistance. The couple owned a small, infertile plot of land where the husband grew vegetables. Despite his hunched back, the couple walked over an hour each day to sell produce at the market. Life was difficult, yet they found comfort in mutual reliance and companionship.
Story 6
Mr. Cheng is a dialysis patient who must undergo treatment for over four hours every day, preventing him from holding a permanent job. Instead, he earns a modest income through recycling work. His wife, who was born with infantile paralysis, dedicates herself to caring for their four-year-old son. Though living in poverty, the family remains united and resilient.
Story 7
Mrs. Hsieh was diagnosed with a terminal illness and informed that she had only months, or possibly a few years, to live. Her greatest concern was the future of her three daughters and one son. With no relatives to rely on except her elderly mother-in-law, who herself required care, Mrs. Hsieh faced her remaining days with deep anxiety for her children’s well-being.
Story 8
Grandfather Fan was once a successful businessman but lost everything due to unforeseen misfortune. Subsequently abandoned by his children, he devoted himself entirely to caring for his bedridden wife, who had suffered from severe arthritis for five years, and their three granddaughters, all under the age of fifteen. Despite overwhelming hardship, he never wavered in his sense of responsibility.
Story 9
Mr. and Mrs. Lin once lived a stable life until a series of unfortunate events caused their circumstances to deteriorate. Mrs. Lin has a mental disability and cannot function independently in society. Mr. Lin supported the family by driving trucks, but after a serious traffic accident, he required extensive rehabilitation. Without rehabilitation, he cannot work; without work, he cannot care for his wife—creating a devastating cycle of hardship.
Story 10
Mr. and Mrs. Chang have been married for 35 years. For the past 25 years, Mrs. Chang has been immobile, mute, and unresponsive following a sudden unexplained illness. Despite visiting countless doctors and temples, no diagnosis or treatment has been found. Throughout these years, Mr. Chang has devoted himself entirely to caring for his wife, sacrificing his ability to maintain employment or earn a stable income.
Story 11
Mr. and Mrs. Lin, aged 90 and 80 respectively, face the daily challenges of old age and mobility disability. Despite the difficulties, their deep affection is evident. For many years, Mr. Lin has lovingly and patiently cared for his wife, demonstrating unwavering devotion.
Story 12
Mrs. Chang, a woman in her seventies, lives alone as a single mother. After her adopted son married, she was left to support herself. Although officially still considered to have a son, she bears the full burden of taxes without assistance. With her husband long deceased, she survives only through the kindness of neighbors and a landlord who lowered her rent. She is now entirely dependent on the goodwill of others.
Story 13
Mrs. Lee is a single mother who suffers from mild epilepsy and must care for two young children and her elderly mother. Due to her illness, she cannot maintain stable employment and earns a small income through cleaning work at local schools. Despite her hardships, she continues to face life with optimism and strength.
Story 14
Mrs. Yo, aged 75, is a frail widow who once lived with her two sons and granddaughter. Tragedy struck when her elder son passed away, leaving behind a young child whose mother later abandoned her. Her younger son’s wife prevents him from caring for his mother, leaving Mrs. Yo isolated and burdened with responsibility.
Story 15
Dr. George Wood, President of TBS Group Corporation, has long been dedicated to charitable causes. He is a long-time supporter of the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families, providing regular donations and participating in emergency relief efforts. Over the years, the Foundation has received numerous letters of gratitude from children and parents, expressing heartfelt appreciation to this anonymous benefactor.
